Tips for Taking an Article Writing Challenge
By: Denise Willms
There seem to be a lot of article writing challenges going on these days. I’m coming up on the end of a 90 articles in 90 days challenge. Most others I’ve seen are for writing 30 articles in 30 days.
I have to admit, I’m nowhere near reaching my goal of writing 90 articles in 90 days. But I’ve realized, the important thing about a challenge isn’t how many articles you end up with.
An article writing challenge is an opportunity to develop article writing and marketing habits that can keep you writing consistently for a long time to come. You can also learn some tricks to keep you focused on writing faster and creating more effective articles.
Here are some of the tips and tricks I’ve picked up during my challenge.
1. Write first thing in the morning. The best time I (and many other writers) have found to write is first thing in the morning, before the kids are up and even before you check your email. Your ideas will be fresher, and you’ll be able to get more done, without any distractions.
2. Set a timer. Set a timer for 33 minutes or so, and tell yourself you can’t do anything except write your article until your timer goes off. Your articles will be of a higher quality because you’re not allowed to think about anything else!
3. Find a cheerleader. Connect with others who are taking your challenge, or people who write articles regularly. You can share ideas, successes and frustrations.
4. Ask for help. Remember you don’t have to do it all on your own. Using an article ghostwriter is a valid way to increase your article output if you don’t have time to write your own. If you’re stretching yourself by taking a challenge, it’s a good time to experiment with a ghostwriter and find someone you can work with longterm.

Thanks these are great tips!
Thanks for posting the tips, so far I have 3 articles done and submitted which might not seem like many, but it’s BIG for me! I had a pretty good idea when I joined the challenge that I wouldn’t be able to 30 in 30 however, I knew it would get me moving and it has. I hadn’t submitted any article since Feb/07 and only had 6 in total.
You are my cheerleader & inspiration Carrie! Thanks for putting out the challenge, I really needed the push.
Thanks Carrie! They’re great tips.
I do like that hour or so in the morning before the girls wake up. I usually use that time to catch up on all my emails & Twitter messages from all you guys ‘across the pond’. I like to know what I’ve been missing while I was sleeping! LOL.
However, I will try to devote the first half hour of the day on my articles from now on and see if it helps my productivity!
I’m on Article 8 on the 8th of September, so not doing too bad. I had hoped to be way ahead by now though!
Thanks Carrie! It’s nice to know that you got a little behind on your challenge as well, it makes me feel a little better (and less like a loser) since I got behind on my challenge – well, I’d better go, I’ve got some writing to do!!! Thanks for the encouragement and tips!
Carrie, thank you for reprinting my article here. It’s nice to know that my experiences can help others – which is my favorite part about article writing and marketing.
When I’m finished the challenge I’m doing right now, I’ll have to look into joining yours.
I have to say I love the cheerleader one. A good cheerleader always helps and get you so motivated.
It is also nice when you can be the cheerleader for someone else that may need some motivation.
