Setting Up My Blog: Did I Forget Something?

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

I have a little confession to make.

I don’t know the first thing about setting up a WordPress blog.

Oh sure, I know how to hit the “publish” button. I can even fiddle with the html code on the sidebars if I want to add a button or two.

But when it comes to actually getting the thing from a) buying a domain name to z) writing my first post…. uhh, no. When people find out I’m a blogger, they assume I’m technically skilled, but the truth is that I have to I hire that stuff out.

But Lynette Chandler knows!

And she just put together this really cool free .pdf called:  Blog Setup Checklist

Now, this isn’t a guide to *promoting* your blog if you already have one. It’s a step by step checklist that takes you from buying that cool domain name to writing and publishing your first posts. Stuff like putting the actual WordPress file on your hosting space, and installing the plugins that make WordPress so awesome to use.

Would that be helpful?

You can get it, again for free, here:  Blog Setup Checklist

When you download the .pdf, I strongly encourage you to visit TechBasedTraining (links in the document) while you’re at it. They have some awesome training to help Virtual Assistants (or really any marketer) expand their skills into the tech arena.

In fact I’m fairly certain that I can do most of the stuff described here in the checklist. I just bought a domain name for my 9 year old son who wants to start blogging. I’ll let you know how I do!

Easy PLR Publisher – I LOVE This Plugin

Monday, September 28th, 2009

You know I’m a big fan of All Private Label Content, a PLR membership site owned by Alice Seba and Mila Sidman.

I’ve been a member for a couple of years now, but this month I’ve got new reason to love my membership: Speedy APLC Publisher.

What is it?

Speedy Publisher is a whiz-bang plug-in for your WordPress blog that allows you to instantly publish your PLR content with just a few clicks of a mouse. It is offered completely free to all monthly members of All Private Label Content.

With the plug-in, you can quickly and easily:

1. Mass upload your PLR content – .txt format – All the ALL PLR articles are in .txt format, but you can also use the plug-in for other PLR content (including Natural Mom PLR, for example!), provided it is in .txt format as well

2. Schedule imported content for publication e.g. Every other day, every 2/3/etc days.

3. Choose categories. Publish all articles in one category of your choice or individually select a category.

4. Even choose the authors. Assign all articles to one author or individually assign articles to author(s) of your choice.

This plug in is already putting some PLR to use that (confession!) would have sat, useless and NOT earning me money, on my desktop for likely several more weeks.

(Note: No sneaky stuff, the plug-in license remains active for as long as you keep your monthly membership active.)

Watch this video to get a sneak peek of of how the Speedy Publisher works, then mosey on over to All Private Label Content to sign up!

Free Report: Info Products Plus Giveaway

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Crissy of IndieBizChicks was kind enough to let me distribute a report she recently put together.
crissy
It covers the basics of creating an information product, especially for a beginner.

If you’re a new internet marketer or mom blogger, you may not think you have it in you to create an info product.

But, you do. :)

If you’re creating content for a blog or a website, you can add an additional income stream to your business by creating an information product.

Crissy’s report, which you can download right here: What The #%? Are Info Products Anyway? offers some suggestions to help you brainstorm ideas for your first info product, as well as guiding you how to do it.

More than that, she’s got a sweet deal for my readers and subscribers. Crissy is giving away two copies of her newest ebooks!

Friday Freebie: Free Website Traffic

Saturday, December 1st, 2007

This is a little belated since it’s Saturday, so forgive me. :)

This week for frugal Friday I’m passing along a special report written by Nicole Dean of Sales Army Secrets. It outlines 7 ways of getting traffic to your website for free. A couple of these I haven’t even delved into myself so I’m learning something new too.

I’ve decided each week on Friday to give away some type of freebie here on my blog. This week, it’s a How To Make Your Newsletter List Love You.

This is an 11 page report with tips on getting started with your list: why start a newsletter and how to plan one that your website visitors will enjoy reading, how to get more subscribers to your list and secrets on how to get them to spend money with you.

You can download it here, no strings attached: Newsletter Love

Enjoy! And feel free to share it too.

Is It Ok To Require Something In Exchange For Freebies?

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

A subscriber wrote today what I think is a common question, especially in some work at home markets. Her question was basically asking whether she should give freebies away without requiring an opt in. She says:

“I have heard conflicting idea’s on what’s proper. I offer free stuff, ebooks mostly to my customers. It’s all listed on a page called (keywords here)- Well I just wrote a new ebook that I am going to feature, however, I am not sure how to market it.

I have heard some people say you need to have people sign up for your newsletter in order to get free stuff – then others say that that’s not fair to make someone do something to get something – so that’s why I stopped making people sign up for to get the free stuff.

So do I make the person have to sign up for our newsletter in order to get the new ebook?”

I got her permission to post this here because, as I said, I think this is an important issue in certain markets. Here was my response:

I do both. I have freebies that I only offer to subscribers, and other things I give away freely. There is absolutely nothing wrong with requiring an opt in to get something, it’s smart marketing and businesses do it all the time. But if I do give something away without requiring an opt in, I have affiliate links in the report or ebook or I try to sell my own product so that I’ll make money. I rarely give something away without it benefitting me somehow.

We’re in business to make money. There’s no shame in that!

What about you? Have you heard that it’s wrong to ask for an opt in to give someone a freebie? It occurs to me that all businesses ask something of you in order to get something. You have to send something in, give them your name or email, show up at the store in person, or what have you. That’s not a bad thing. Again, your business exists to earn you a profit. You’re not in this for fun (although you should be enjoying yourself!). You want to put food on the table for your babies.

Why shouldn’t you require something in return for your valuable information? Don’t listen to anyone who tells you that. My guess is that they fear money or success, and aren’t a very reliable source of business advice.

I would like to hear your thoughts on this. :)
