Getting Free Publicity (Me in the AJC)

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Two quick things I want to mention today.

One, my friend Elizabeth Ashe is spreading the word about six days to Saturday on her blog.  Go check it out to see what she’s so pumped about.

Second, me and the kids were in the Sunday Atlanta Journal Constitution. Here is the article, sans pictures. It was a cover story on Earth Day.

What I wanted to tell you about this that is significant is that all of the media attention I’ve gotten recently has come from blogging. Every bit! I haven’t sent out a press release in far too long and I haven’t done a single thing to generate publicity.

I just blogged.

I sat and had coffee with my next door neighbor this morning (not the skanky ones who live beneath me who I’m moving to get away from in ten days, the one next door). She is a freelance writer. I am encouraging her to start blogging on her own domain and told her about the rockawesome (I just totally made up that word, on the fly, just now) MomWebs WordPress blog install for $10 deal.

When I told her that I had was on MSNBC and today’s AJC, and other places and stuff, just from blogging, that got her attention.

You’re probably already blogging if you’re reading this.

But if you aren’t, um…

what are you waiting for?

For $10 you could be up and running. That is chump change my friends. Get on it.

I don’t care WHAT your business is.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a freelance writer like my neighbor or if you sell Tupperware or repair Vespas or sew cloth diapers or what.

Blogging can help you get more traffic, customers, publicity, sales, you name it.

So get a bloggin.

And if you need some help with what to blog about or how to get going or what it’s all about or whatever, hire me to coach you. I can show you the ropes in about an hour.

Free Report: Info Products Plus Giveaway

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

Crissy of IndieBizChicks was kind enough to let me distribute a report she recently put together.
crissy
It covers the basics of creating an information product, especially for a beginner.

If you’re a new internet marketer or mom blogger, you may not think you have it in you to create an info product.

But, you do. :)

If you’re creating content for a blog or a website, you can add an additional income stream to your business by creating an information product.

Crissy’s report, which you can download right here: What The #%? Are Info Products Anyway? offers some suggestions to help you brainstorm ideas for your first info product, as well as guiding you how to do it.

More than that, she’s got a sweet deal for my readers and subscribers. Crissy is giving away two copies of her newest ebooks!

… but I don’t know how to write a press release!

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

Yesterday I sent an email to a woman who asked me how to market her new website. In my reply to her, I recommended two things:

Article marketing and Press releases

I mention those two marketing methods over and over because they work, and because they don’t cost a lot of money – which is important for a new business owner.

But then the next thing I often hear is:

“But I don’t know HOW to write an article or press release!”

I’ll share some of my own article writing tips another time, but for now, my friend Alice Seba has come up with an awesome solution to this dilemna. She and publicity diva Shannon Cherry (I’m a member of her Penny Pinching Publicity and have written about it here) have teamed up to solve this problem for you.

They have created customizable press releases for a variety of business models. No matter what kind of online business you have, you can use press releases to get lots of attention, at no cost, from the media!

Tons and tons of free publicity for the taking

Sunday, July 1st, 2007

Silly Blogger! For some reason this post ended up way down at the bottom of my blog when I just published it today, July 1. So I’m pasting it here again because I don’t want you to miss hearing about this :)

Penny Pinching Publicity is a private monthly membership forum owned by Shannon Cherry of Be Heard Solutions. I joined as a member a little over a month ago and wanted to test it out before mentioning to you all. So far, I’m very impressed with the value Shannon provides with PPP. My membership has saved me money and time so far, both with crafting my releases and submitting them online.

Participants are taught the insider secrets of working the media by Shannon, who is an expert in Public Relations and Marketing. While I’ve been doing press releases with good effect since 2004, now I feel confident that I’ll be able to generate even more free publicity and establish a relationship with the media, both local and otherwise.

The forum provides a place to ask questions about how to pitch a story to an editor, and get feedback on your marketing efforts from Shannon and the other members… this is really valuable when writing a release. Sometimes others can point out things that aren’t obvious to us, but that can hamper our efforts.

Shannon provides hot leads that members can follow up on to try to get media coverage, a free press release each month that can be edited by members (and this is worth well more than the monthly membership fee!) , notices about changes in the media and a monthly report with tips and tricks to help small business owners get lots of free attention and publicity. She also gives members a checklist to help them submit their release.

Shannon even includes a media list with 350 publications to send your release.

I have found the membership to be extremely valuable so far, and am looking forward to continually learning how to leverage publicity for more traffic and sales. The free monthly press release alone is worth far more than $19.95. Shannon provides a lot of value for a very low price.

Many of us have used press releases to get free publicity, but we no doubt are making costly mistakes and handicapping ourselves. It’s extremely valuable to learn the ins and outs from an expert. Anyone who wants to get a lot of marketing bang for their buck should consider joining.

13: Get lucky with press releases

Friday, January 12th, 2007

The other week at Mom Masterminds I posted about a press release that I wrote for my Mom. It was announcing an event she was hosting for breast cancer awareness at her Tea Room in Fairburn, GA.

Since then, she has gotten several phone calls from reporters. One of whom was from the Atlanta Journal Constitution, who wrote an article that appeared on the first page of the food section. Another was a local county newspaper that put her picture and a write up on the front page. And she says her phone is ringing off the hook with reservations. :)

Are you doing press releases to get free publicity? If not, why not? Because you aren’t sure if anyone is interested in your online business? Think again. They just might be. The key is finding something newsworthy that benefits the reporter’s customer – the readers of the newspaper.

Here is where I learned about writing effective press releases.
