Content Site Update

Monday, January 28th, 2008

I mentioned in this post about improving what I’ve got in 2008, and in this post I listed some specific changes I made to a content site one day.

By way of update, I’ve seen a couple of things already, namely I made two affiliate sales. This site hasn’t made an affiliate sale in many months so that is definitely not a coincidence. I’m happy about that because it means the trend will continue.

No big jump in traffic yet but I hired a ghostwriter to write an article for me, so now I’ll submit it around the web to get more incoming links and traffic. More updates to come!

Making It Better: Content Site #1

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

When I said I was going to update you on my “Making It Better in 2008” progress, I wasn’t kidding!

Here is a site that has been gathering dust for FAR too long. I haven’t added content to it or made any changes in over a year (although I have sent out a couple of newsletters to the list.)

I thought of selling it, but decided to keep it since it fits into my overall target market. I also had some ideas on how to improve the site. One of the reasons I wanted to start with this one is because it makes NO money. It’s the only site I own that doesn’t generate sales or Adsense income.

So, similar to the thinking of a person who pays off their debt starting with the lowest balance for the psychological boost it will give them, I am starting with this one. Anything would be an improvement. LOL!

For starters, this is a content site all about limiting screen time. It has articles on why too much TV is a bad idea, and ideas on what to do instead. It makes affiliate recommendations, mostly books about research on TV’s effects and a couple of other products (some from Amazon.com and a few ebooks). It has a newsletter (actually just an autoresponder with a bunch of messages) with tips and ideas for family time that don’t involve screens. There are over 1,000 subscribers on the list. There is serious potential there, so I need to work on getting those folks to buy too.

I thought it had potential however, and was already getting some decent traffic and had incoming links from similar sites in this “un-TV” genre. It gets search engine traffic from a couple hundred unique keyword phrases.

Here is a screen shot of the Before:

And about half an hour Later:

You probably can’t tell a whole lot from the pictures, but I did the following:

  1. Removed Adsense ads from 90% of the pages. The ads were making NO money. When I emailed a friend about the site, she said she wasn’t surprised that this was the case, since the ads were showing up all about watching TV on the computer. DUH! People who are trying to watch less TV aren’t likely to click on ads about watching TV, are they? So that was an obvious thing to change.

  2. Changed the left nav menu so the links were smaller and shorter. I also added several affiliate recommendations to the left menu, and that font is a bit larger, making them stand out more.
  3. Wrote a bolder, more direct headline.
  4. Made the font larger and bolder on the right nav to draw attention to the newsletter sign up box.
  5. Added a picture of a product that I found on Amazon, it’s a perfect fit: a device that plugs into a Tv, computer or video game that enables a parent to set a timer that will turn the device off completely. This is a higher priced product than most I promote so I’m interested to see if it converts well.
  6. Made the page wider to give it a more modern look.

That’s it for now. Later on this month I’ll: add some more content, hire a ghostwriter to write an article I can send out, do some keyword research to guide me when I add new pages, and look for more appropriate affiliate products to recommend.

Stay tuned. No pun intended. ;)

Easy Affiliate Marketing Tip

Friday, August 24th, 2007

This is a quick and easy tip that can earn you increased affiliate commissions effortlessly once you set it up.

Do you have custom error pages for your sites? If yes, are you promoting an affiliate link on them?

Log in to your website stats and you may be surprised at how many requests your server gets for “bad” pages… if you have a custom error page, this won’t be a total waste of traffic and can turn into money in your pocket.

If you have a website that uses Cpanel (like MomWebs, my favorite web host), creating your error page is super easy. Just log into Cpanel and click “error pages”. A box will come onto the screen and you can enter your html there. If you don’t speak html, design the page first in Frontpage or whatever html editor you use , then paste the source code into the box.

Promote an appropriate affiliate product on that page and turn mistakes into cash. As an example, you can see how I’m promoting a menu planning product as an affiliate on one of my error pages HERE.

You can get more affiliate marketing tips and even a free audio I conducted with a mom who earns full time money with affiliate marketing.

How To Make Money – Start a Recipe Blog

Review: Just Add Sweat – How To Start a Recipe Blog

I mentioned Nicole Dean’s Just Add Sweat business guides here a few weeks ago. Now I’m writing a full review since I’ve had an opportunity to review two of the Just Add Sweat guides personally.

What I love about these guides is their simplicity. Some “how to internet marketing”products are too involved. By the time you read and listen to everything, you’retoo exhausted to get started and have no idea what to do next!

Not so with Just Add Sweat. Each consists of a 30- 35 page ebook, an audio success story and a few resources to help you get going. It’s not so much that you’ll be a victim of too much information.

Let’s start with How to Start a Recipe Blog For Fun and Profit.

If you’re online pretty regularly and you eat food (which is pretty much anyone who is reading this!), I’d be willing to wager that you’ve visited at least one recipe blog in the last month. I know I’ve visited several.

Is it possible to earn money doing this? Nicole is qualified to answer this question because she does earn money from her recipe blog (as well as owning many other sites).

Why a blog? Because of its simplicity. You don’t have to know anything about html to start a blog. Blogs are also the darlings of search engines.

Nicole shows how simple it is to start a blog. The ebook even contains screenshots guiding you through the process of setting up your blog and publishing to it (creating new posts/pages).

This guide is an excellent introduction to affiliate marketing, one of the ways you’ll be earning money from your recipe blog. Nicole even has specific recommendations for food related affiliate programs you can promote for cash. There are several other ways to earn money from your recipe blog, detailed inside.

The ebook shares insider tips on how to get traffic to your blog at no cost, including how to get people to link to your blog for free. And if you ever run out of things to say, Nicole shares how to get content at no cost (or for pennies) that will keep your audience and the search engines happy and your income growing.

The ebook shares important information on how to choose a target market or “niche” foryour recipe blog. Why pick a target market?

As I write this, I happen to be sitting inside a Barnes and Noble. Right now there are dozens of BBQ cookbooks on display. Who knew that there was so much to say about BBQ? But there are books on Men and BBQ, Easy BBQ, Vegetarian BBQ, BBQ and canned beans, etc. Each has a different target market in mind and so the author can be unique even amidst all the BBQ cookbooks.

This ebook and accompanying resources make it so easy to get started with a recipe blog that you could buy it and literally be up and running with your new blog in an houror two. How easy is that?

How Do I Research An Affiliate Program?

Wednesday, July 4th, 2007

Yesterday a subscriber to my newsletter asked me this question:

How do you recommend researching an affiliate program? I want to assure that any affiliate program that I join, the retailer delivers goods and/or services and pays as promises.”

I thought this was a really good question and wanted to post my answer here.

Finding affiliate products to promote is actually quite easy. Many companies in all types of markets are aware of the benefits they receive with having an affiliate program and are offering one. But if you’re concerned about promoting a product that doesn’t live up to its promises, or are concerned about the affiliate manager not paying you (a valid concern!), here are some tips.

  • Buy the product and experience its benefits. If at all possible, buy and review the product first. An honest testimonial that shows how you benefitted in some way from the product is very valuable, it comes through in your words. This would be especially important for a recommendation you make on your blog or that you send out to your newsletter subscribers.

But realistically, you might not be able to do this with every single product you want to promote, nor do you have to. For instance, I have a site all about pretty nursing bras. I’m a breastfeeding Mom, so I know what makes a good nursing bra. I’ve bought and worn a couple of the styles I promote on that site, but not all of them. But my knowledge of the product in general is enough for me to know that I’m promoting a quality product to my target market. I don’t claim to have personal experience with each style however.

  • Go through an affiliate network. The companies that use an affiliate network to manage their program have to jump through some hoops to qualify to have their product advertised in the network, and they also have to be well funded. Some good places to start your search are listed here.

The caveat with these programs is that they almost always pay less than independent programs, because they have to give the network a cut of the action. So you trade a few commission percentage points for security.

  • Ask around on message forums. Ask some of the people in your network who are promoting affiliate programs which ones they recommend and have experience with. Some of these will have their own affiliate program. If they’re a part of the community, they have an interest in keeping a good reputation as an affiliate manager. As you form relationships with other online business owners, you’ll know who you can trust.

Mom Masterminds has been a great place for me to find affiliate programs to promote, because I know the women who own them. They will often let me review the product for free to put my stamp of approval on it, or arrange a steep discount for me as a MM member.

  • Ask the affiliate manager for a review copy. Of course, they can’t give everyone who asks a free product because then everyone would join the program just to get the free product. But, often a product owner will give you a copy for review if you promise to write a good testimonial, or can prove you have a large marketing list to promote to, or are willing to otherwise show you’re serious about promoting their product. Try writing a heartfelt email and asking.

Still, I don’t want to give the impression that finding good affiliate programs you can trust is difficult, because it isn’t. I’ve never once had trouble with an affiliate manager not paying me or not paying on time. I have heard of it happening, but it’s extremely rare. One click of the “publish” button and marketers could expose the program and the owner as a fraud! Most of them just don’t want to go there. :)

21: Keep It Simple

Thursday, January 25th, 2007

It’s so easy to get overwhelmed with your online business, isn’t it? There are so many ways to market your site and grow your business, but unfortunately, sometimes the more information we have available, the less we do.

It’s kind of like when you tell a child to clean their rooms. They take a look around, get overwhelmed, and either quit or get distracted playing. But if you give them simple instructions like: “Put your dirty clothes in the hamper and your toys in the toybox.”, they’re up and running.

I got a wonderful newsletter from Allan Gardyne of Associate Programs. Which, by the way, if you’re not on his newsletter list, I highly recommend it. It’s one of the very few that I read, word for word, every time.

He spoke of this overwhelm into inactivity phenomenon and how to overcome it:

Just do two things.

Yep, this very successful affiliate marketer, one of the most recognizable names on the Internet, said that success in affiliate marketing could be had if you did just TWO things every single day.

1) Add an article to your site
2) Get an incoming link

I couldn’t agree more with this! It really is that simple to have success online. Take out all the bells and whistles and just focus on these two things, and you’ll make money. If you want to make more money, do those things multiple times a day or pay someone else to do those things for you. But just keep it simple :)

You can read the entire article on Allan’s site HERE.

16: More Help for Natural Business Owners

Monday, January 15th, 2007

Speaking of which, the ecourse I just launched is here. It’s all about how natural business owners can increase their online earnings with affiliate programs.

I have two reasons for launching this.

1) I rub shoulders with a lot of “natural mommas” online and I see that so many of them are product sellers – with awesome products, no less – but they’re not taking advantage of the possibilities that exist with affiliate marketing. They could market complementary products to their visitors and newsletter subscribers and easily increase their profits.

2) I need more great products to market on my own network of sites. So I would love for more of these Moms to launch affiliate programs of their own!

The ecourse features an interview with Kelly McCausey, who earns a substantial portion of her full time online income passively with affiliate programs. I hope it helps you :)
