Simple Free Beginning Affiliate Marketing Guide

Friday, August 21st, 2009

My friend Nicole Dean (who I recently met in person after several years of online acquaintance) has put together a fabulous and FREE quick guide to getting started with affiliate marketing.

When people ask what I do, and I answer “affiliate marketing”, I either get a glazed look in response, or questions.

What’s that?

Typically people seem curious about the possibility of earning money without having to develop a product of their own.

But how do you get started?

Instead of conducting your own search and getting bogged down in way too much info, start here.

Download Nicole’s simple free guide to beginning affiliate marketing.

Affiliate Marketing Tips from Jimmy

Saturday, March 21st, 2009

Jimmy D. Brown is one of my favorite internet marketers. For years, I was a member of his List and Traffic membership site.  He’s one of the best teachers you’ll come across. His style is direct and easy for the beginner to understand, but there’s plenty of meat for the seasoned marketer as well.

affiliatenairebuttonJimmy recently launched another awesome membership program, all about affiliate marketing. It’s called AffliateNaire.

Since I’ve been talking a lot about affiliate marketing lately, I thought I would publish a few of Jimmy’s articles on the topic.

I highly recommend any of Jimmy’s learning products if you need a helping hand with your business. Jimmy is definitely a no nonsense type of guy. You won’t see pictures of his fancy cars and gargantuan homes on his sales pages, but he’s one of the oldest and most well known marketers on the internet.

How to Promote Any Affiliate Program In 5 Easy Steps

By Jimmy D. Brown of “Affiliatenaire

…………………….

Using ezine articles is a great way to promote your favorite affiliate program. What I’d like to do in this article is provide you with a simple system for effectively writing an ezine article that strategically promotes your offer.

There are five steps…

1. CHOOSE THE OFFER YOU WISH TO PROMOTE

This one is kind of a no-brainer. It all begins with deciding what you want to promote. What offer would you like to send traffic to.

HINT: You can promote your affiliate link directly, but what works better is to promote a list at YOUR site which you then use to promote your affiliate link over and over again after the visitor becomes a subscribers.

2. DETERMINE YOUR “USEFUL, BUT INCOMPLETE” APPROACH.

I love to use what I have coined as the “useful, but incomplete” approach when using freebies of any kind. (Ezine articles, free eBooks, reports, eCourses, etc.)

What I mean by that is simply this: You provide your reader with “useful” information (something they find of value and are able to actually apply) but make certain that it is “incomplete” in that they can better use the information by making a purchase.

That’s “useful, but incomplete.” And it works like a charm.

The idea is to use your content to build up to your desired response. You provide the reader with content, and then you make an offer that allows them to fully utilize the content, gain extra insight from the content or maximize the content in some additional way.

Let me give you an example -

If I wanted to promote an autoresponder service in an ezine article, how could I do it? I’d write an article that explains how to benefit from using autoresponders. My article would exlain different uses of autoresponders
and how the reader could profit from implementing the ideas.

** I.E. 7 Ways To Create Revenue Streams With Autoresponders

Naturally, they will need an autoresponder service in order to use the information, right? And I just happen to know of a great service they can use. More on that later.

OK, so that’s an example of how to promote a SERVICE offer with your ezine article. What about a software product or an eBook?

Want some examples?

Good, because I’ve got two…

TO PROMOTE A SOFTWARE PRODUCT. Let’s suppose you want to promote
a software program that creates “ecovers”. How can you do it?

– Write an article outlining how important presentation of your
offer is, and how creating a cover graphic can increase response
rates by up to 1300%

– Write a step-by-step tutorial article for “do-it-yourselfers”,
explaining how to design your own graphics from scratch. Then
promote the software as a super-simplified way of doing it.

TO PROMOTE AN EBOOK. Let’s suppose you want to promote an ebook
that teaches advanced list-building strategies. How can you do it?

– Write an article that covers the “basics” of building lists,
and then promote the eBook as the “advanced” tactics.

– Write an article on how to profit from a list, and then promote
the eBook as the “how to build the list.”

See how easy this is?

That’s how it works. Determine what your “useful, but incomplete”
approach will be, and then…

3. TURN YOUR APPROACH INTO A TIPS OR TUTORIAL ARTICLE.

Let’s use my example again. I decided that I would describe various uses of autoresponders and how the reader can actually profit from them. What kind of tips list or tutorial could I create?

* How to Generate More Subscribers, Sales and Profits With
Automated Follow-Up Messages”

* 7 Powerful And Profitable Ways To Use Autoresponders To Skyrocket
Your Sales and Subscribers!

* Want to Increase Your Online Profits And Leads? Here are 7 Ways
to Do It…

I actually went with the middle title. I wrote my list of the 7 ideas that I wanted to share. And I had the makings of a perfect article to promote an offer.

That’s all you need to do. Determine your end result. Decide how to get there with your “useful, but incomplete” approach. And then develop a list, or even a step-by-step tutorial for your article that leads the reader along.

With each new “idea” or “way” or “tip” or “step” or “strategy” that you share, you can further direct the reader towards realizing their need of your upcoming offer, and lay the foundation for them to accept the offer.

4. EXPAND ON EACH POINT TO BUILD YOUR CONTENT.

Here’s more of the easy part. Just “fill-in-the-blanks” to complete your article. Write 1-2 short paragraphs for each of your points. Make them good. Provide quality content. The offer you will soon make will see poor results if your information isn’t useful.

Remember, you are trying to presell the reader on the idea that they are going to need your offer. If you don’t provide them with quality information that they WANT to begin using immediately, then why will they want to buy what you are promoting?

Light a fire in them. Motivate them. Challenge them. Give them such nuggets of gold that they want to keep mining until they hit the mother lode!

5. PUT ON THE FINISHING TOUCHES WITH THE “FIVE PILLARS”

There are five things that you should always do to finish up your ezine article. Don’t skip any of them. They are all critical…

* POLISH. Re-read your article. Does it provide information that really is “useful” to the reader? And yet leaves them wanting even more? That’s what you want. Polish it. Put on the wax and make it shine. It has a very specific
purpose — make certain it has the means to achieve it.

* PROMOTE. Use your resource box to promote your offer. This is why we’ve written the article, right? Remember step one? It’s time to put it into play. Give the reader what they (hopefully) are wanting…a way to maximize the information you gave them.

* PROOF. Don’t do this yourself. Have a trusted friend, relative or co-worker check your article for grammatical and typographical errors. The last thing you want to do is present a poor image after sharing some high quality information.

* PUBLISH. Zip your new article out to your favorite list of publishers. Submit it to the announcement lists and the ezine directories. Don’t forget to publish it yourself in your own newsletter!

* PROFIT. If you’ve covered all the bases that I’ve mentioned, then profits are almost certain to start coming in when your ezine article is published. You deserve it. Be proud of your accomplishments.

And then start it all over again!

That’s how you promote your favorite affiliate program in 5 easy steps using ezine articles.

Obviously, there are many other ways to promote your affiliate program, as well as a considerable more “details” in the strategy we’ve looked at today. If you’d like 52 great ways to promote your affiliate link AND complete step-by-step details for each of them, be sure to read the important details below…

25 Random Things

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

Lynn Terry, who I met about a year ago in person, has tagged me with the “25 Things” meme.

Lynn has been one of my most important mentors since I started with my online business 6 years ago. It was a blog post of hers that inspired me to launch my very first niche affiliate website. (It’s still online but I no longer own it.)

The success of that site, and the knowledge that following a proven system *works*, inspired me to switch my focus to affiliate marketing (instead of direct sales, which I was doing back when I first got started).

If you’re new to me (maybe a new Twitter follower from Blissdom? Welcome!), here are a few quirky facts about me so we can get more acquainted. I’ve done this meme already on my Facebook page, which had a more personal theme, but since this is my business blog I’ll focus more on being a work at home mom and internet marketer.

  1. I haven’t had a “job” in over ten years.
  2. The last “job” I had was a supervisor at Starbucks in downtown Atlanta.
  3. I worked until just a few days before my oldest son was born.
  4. I never went back.
  5. I have no education to speak of (high school graduate) and am self taught.
  6. I think it’s dangerous for a woman to be economically dependent and never will be again, no matter how my current circumstances change (I’m a divorced single mom who supports her family).
  7. I have Irish Traveler (tinker) blood and would love to live in an Airstream, traveling the country with my kids and working via a wifi connection.
  8. I am mildly agoraphobic, and could easily live in a small space (like an Airstream).
  9. I do not own a television set.
  10. But I never miss House (I watch it on my laptop).
  11. No matter how little sleep I got the night before, I cannot sleep late.
  12. I hope my kids never have a job. I want to teach them entrepreneurship.
  13. As long as that’s what they want.
  14. My kids are homeschooled. We have an eclectic style and do history, science and other subjects all together, Little House on the Prairie style.
  15. I am deeply religious and after school spend several years as a youth minister, but prefer to compartmentalize. I don’t mix business and faith.
  16. I’ve been single for over two years, but the divorce was only final weeks ago. I “didn’t believe in divorce”.
  17. Oddly, my ex initiated the proceedings, but I was the one who left him (for the fourth and final time) and just before signing on the dotted line, said he didn’t want the divorce. I, on the other hand, very much did.
  18. What does that have to do with business? Don’t know. (See #6)
  19. My oldest child has known how to brew coffee for several years now (he’s 10), and loves to bring me coffee in bed. It comes natural I guess. (See #2, 3)
  20. I think I have an awesome life. I am so blessed to be able to do what I do, from home, surrounded by my kids.
  21. I recently got my 2nd speeding ticket… the first one in 16 years!
  22. When I need to focus, I drop the kids off at my mother’s, head to Starbucks and write my brains out.
  23. I developed my first information product, Natural Mom Business Guide, one day when my internet connection stopped working.
  24. I am on a mission to help educate mom bloggers that they can make money and still have integrity and be true to their voice.
  25. Other than Twitter, I don’t do social media. But I do love Twitter. The other day my sister called me on the phone worried, because she hadn’t seen me on Twitter that day. LOL!

Thanks Lynn, that was fun! Now I’m tagging:

Affiliate Marketing Lessons and Mistakes

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

I have another post in the works for my series on Affiliate Marketing for Mom Bloggers. The first post was about beginning steps with affiliate marketing and mentioned finding good programs to promote. In the meantime, I wanted to share this.

Affiliate Marketing Lessons and Mistakes

A few months ago, I joined Kelly McCausey and several other panel members to talk affiliate marketing for her Moms Affiliate Expo. Did you get a chance to listen live to this webinar? It was incredibly informative. I was supposed to be an expert and I learned a few things!

Here are a few things we talked about:

Not Promoting Enough

It’s all too easy to promote an affiliate product once and then forget about it. Maybe you even made a few sales, but you put it on the back burner and never mention it again. This is a huge mistake! Especially if the product is a proven seller for you, KEEP promoting it. Remind your readers of your original review or recommendation. Do this again and again.

Not Being Organized

Being organized as an affiliate marketer means creating some simple easy system for keeping track of: your affiliate link, the name of the product you’re promoting, the affiliate login area where you check stats and get new resources, your affiliate username and password, etc.

Even if it’s as simple as using Gmail’s “archive” function, do something to keep your affiliate info handy. Some people use a spreadsheet or a simple Word document. Whatever works, just do it! You’re much more likely to make that affiliate recommendation if you have your link at your fingertips.

Better yet – create redirects on your domain instead of using your default affiliate link. And be sure to keep that redirect url easy to remember and handy.

Don’t assume all of your listeners, readers, visitors are OLD and have heard it all.

This goes hand in hand with that first tip. Sometimes we’re afraid to mention an affiliate product we like because we don’t want our readers to get sick of us talking about it.

But that’s an error. It will stop you from making “evergreen” affiliate recommendations. Every day new people come to your blog, website, or podcast. These new people also need to hear about your favorite products – products that can make their lives easier or help them meet some need. Don’t be shy!

Another tip: Set up a favorites page or recommended page with your oldie but goodie affiliate products.

For instance, on this site you can see the page above called “Recommended Tools“. On that page I have listed all the best products that I’ve used and continue to use daily in my internet business. Some of those programs pay me monthly and I no longer have to actually pay for my membership, which is fantastic! My affiliate income more than covers the cost of the tool.

Did you like these tips? Want to hear more of this affiliate marketing lessons and mistakes audio?

If you didn’t hear it live, you can still download it and all the other recordings. Go here:

This and the other recordings are a fantastic education in affiliate marketing, by and for moms. :)

Affiliate Marketing: Beginning Steps

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

To follow up on my post about affiliate marketing and mommy bloggers, I have decided to start a series on beginning steps to get you started. Be sure to check back regularly – subscribe to my RSS feed or sign up for my free newsletter (sign up box on upper right) so you don’t miss anything.

Here is Beginning Affiliate Marketing Step One:

Find appropriate affiliate products

How do you know what’s appropriate?

That would depend entirely on your niche.

If you blog about babywearing, look for baby slings and ebooks about babyslings.
If you blog about beauty and skin care, look for beauty products and skin care and ebooks about such.
If you blog about kids and crafts, look for kids crafts products and ebooks about kids crafts.

See where I’m going with this?

There are good affiliate products in every niche, so start searching.

A few ways to find them:

Google.

A simple Google search for “keyword + affiliate program” or “keyword + associate program” is a fine start.

Other Blogs

Another shortcut is to look on the blogs of other people in this particular niche to see what they’re promoting, especially sites that you know are more highly trafficked than your own.

But it pays to be choosy about what you promote. Different programs have different payouts and some will convert better than others.

For instance, Amazon.com doesn’t pay the highest percentage, but their site converts well and people often buy other stuff while they’re in there, earning you commission on the whole lot, not just the little book you mentioned.

Find affiliate programs with great tools

Everyone talks about the large affiliate networks like Linkshare, Shareasale, etc. Those are great and I get payouts from them too, but in my personal experience, independent programs convert better and are more eager to please you as their valued affiliate.

To make life easier for yourself, find independent affiliate programs  – especially those run by other work at home moms, and join them. Use the tools they have available.

As an example, I have a few products and my resources for affiliates are listed here: Affiliates Fun

I want to make it super easy for my affiliates to have success so I provide graphics, articles, recipes and brandable reports that they can publish and give away, branded with their affiliate link.

Another great thing about independent affiliate programs? They almost always pay you higher commissions. I pay out 30- 50% to my affiliates.

Plus you get that nice warm feeling that comes from supporting another small business owner. :)

Many of the ladies at Mom Masterminds have fantastic products with amazing affiliate programs. A few of note:

(These all open in a new window and take you directly to the affiliate info.)

Affiliate Products Perfect for Mom Bloggers:

Tiffany Washko’s green smoothies, raw food for kids and salads cookbooks
Christine Steendahl’s Dine Without Whine menu mailer
Susanne Myers Healthy Menu Mailer and Menu Planning Central
Kelly McCausey’s Moms Talk Network home management and biz ebooks
Cara Mirabella’s household management ebooks
Aurelia Williams Real Life personal growth and parenting ebooks and life coaching
Nicole Dean’s party, gift mixes, and home biz ebooks
Alyssa Avant’s beauty by design ministries’ ebooks

So, now that you have found some great products you want to start promoting, how do you skillfully weave your affiliate links into your content?

That will be the topic of the next post in the series. Stay tuned!

I Recommend Two Affiliate Marketing Products

Monday, September 29th, 2008

I am having a fantastic Monday and I hope you are too!

I’ve been packing up the last of my belongings in preparation for an upcoming move, and while I pack up my office I’ve been listening to the Moms Affiliate Expo recordings.

Did you miss the live event? This training is wonderful. You can check it out here: Moms Affiliate Expo

I’m listening to affiliate superstars like Lynn Terry (who I credit with teaching me how to launch my very first affiliate site!), Alice Seba (who I’ve also coached with, her Affiliate Marketing Sweetie product has so far been the only one I’ve recommended on the topic) and many more.

There are also a few audios for brand new beginners that take you step by step through the process of getting started.

Check it out – affiliate marketing is how I earn my income online and it’s a wonderful business model. Before now, I only recommended one product to help you learn affiliate marketing.

Now I can recommend two. :)

I’m Selling It All And Starting Over

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

ocean.jpgNot really. But almost.

I posted last week at Mom Masterminds about my feelings lately regarding my business. And I thought I would share it here so perhaps it could help you avoid the same mistake. I’ll go ahead and paste that now.

“I swear, sometimes I wish I had only 3 websites. If I knew I could get a good price for them, I would put several up for sale. I have been in a kind of funk for about 3 weeks now, and it’s lifting, but part of it is because I feel like I’m scattering my seeds everywhere and diluting my efforts too much. I’ve been thinking about what I really want and what I really enjoy in my business. I no longer want to do what I don’t want to do. And I don’t think I have to. Let me explain.

What I really love is blogging. I don’t have to make myself do it or talk myself into it and I don’t procrastinate about it or do any kind of mind games to get it done. I’m envious of people who ONLY have a blog. That’s it. All their focus goes into it and they do it full time.

I really like affiliate marketing. I don’t particularly like creating products. I don’t wanna do it anymore. Wah!

I have a couple sites that produce a really nice income with minimal work. I can add a teensy bit of content or get another incoming link once a month (or less) and they just keep on pumping out income. That’s fine.

But then I have several small websites in my niche that I feel could ALL be incorporated into my larger site or blog. Some of these aren’t making much money, and I feel their content could be more valuable on a website that IS my focus.

How do you decide whether to move stuff around and reorganize stuff or just let it be? Or sell it?

All this disorganization makes me a little depressed. I know if I had fewer websites I would feel more energetic. Bleh.”

I got all sorts of helpful responses, including:

“Oh Carrie, I so know how you feel! I have too many sites and I know it. I’ve grown out of quit a few of them and my interests in life have taken me in completely different directions.”

and

“You’re in charge and you can start over.”

and

“Your experience is helping me tone down me newbie enthusiasm and focus on the plan!”

and

“Carrie I get it completely. I have never enjoyed being a virtual real estate owner. I much prefer to keep my efforts as centralized as possible.”

After I posted this I felt much better just knowing that other work at home Moms felt the same way I did – which was scattered and pulled and guilty that I wasn’t giving some of the projects the attention they deserved. But I also got to work and started moving towards my goal of fewer projects, done better. More centralization, less scatter.

I sold one website to a wahm who is perfect for it. She’s already marketing to that niche and it was a perfect fit for her.

Then I simply deleted another that wasn’t performing. The domain was about to expire anyway. First I took a look at stats and stuff to see if there was any value I could put on another site, which I did. I moved some of the decent performing pages to another site. Then I kicked it to the curb.

Then I took a serious look at one of my biggest projects, Natural Moms Talk Radio and the blog that goes with it. The site and blog are a little bit inconsistent, and to boot there is another blog that I use just for articles. So.

Right now someone is working their magic on the whole site. It will be centralized into one big blogsitepodcast thing. It’s getting new snazzy graphics and I can hardly wait. Everything I do to the site, whether it’s an informative article, a podcast episode, or a blog post, will boost the rankings of the domain and the other parts of the site, whereas now it’s disjointed.

I feel so much better.

I have another site that’s going to be up on the chopping block soon.

What’s new with your business?

How PLR Benefits Your Business

PLR, or Private Label Rights content is a concept that is mysterious to many, but is really very useful – even essential to the success of online business owners. Purchasing PLR content for use on your websites and in your newsletters or other materials can be quite beneficial to you and your business. It can save you time, money and the headache of having to sit and write all your content yourself.

PLR articles can be edited and changed to suit your specific needs and to personalize the content to your website and your target market, which is one reason that it is so versatile and profitable.

PLR can be used in many different ways. For example, you can use PLR to add fresh, informative content to your website, blog, an e-course or newsletter. You can utilize it to create an e-book or other information product to sell. You can give PLR articles to your affiliates as a means by which to promote your current information products. There are literally dozens of uses. Your imagination’s the limit!

An e-book or e-course can virtually be created from PLR by using multiple articles and breaking them up or piecing them together to form the book or series. Sending out several emails for the e-course over a 5-7 day period will put you in front of those on your list or help you to build a list. Then, the e-book can serve as another stream of income.

If you’re an affiliate marketer and struggle with creating enough content to promote products to your website visitors, PLR can be just the ticket. Product reviews lend themselves extremely well to making affiliate recommendations. Articles can also promote affiliate products as a resource for more information or to solve a problem the reader is experiencing.

Using PLR in your business can free you up some time to spend on other more specialized tasks that are your focus and things that you probably enjoying doing more than creating content.

For PLR content that serves the natural mom and green family market, visit http://www.NaturalMomPLR.com. Get articles, natural product reviews and healthy recipes written by – and for – natural families.

Don’t forget to replace the url with your affiliate link. :-)

3 Affiliate Articles for YOU

If you have a mom, food, or health related website or blog, you might be interested in the email I just sent out to my Articles notification list and my affiliates. I’ll paste it below.

I have a few articles here around the topic of healthy eating. If you aren’t already an affiliate of mine, you can sign upand earn commissions for publishing these articles.

Two of them are found here:http://affiliatesfun.com/salad-articles.html
(The affiliate sign up is there too.) The other is pasted below.

Meeting Your Healthy Eating Goals

So, you’ve resolved to eat healthier in 2008, have you created a plan for this? Setting a goal is great, but without a plan of action, it’s not going to happen. A plan can help you to meet your goal of eating healthier and won’t overwhelm you. To create your plan you will need to decide what steps you are willing to take now to make these new habits last a lifetime. The following are some examples of attainable eating goals:

1. Try something new.
Many times, we all decide we can’t stick to an eating plan because it limits us to certain foods or cuts out entire food groups, like carbohydrates or dairy products. Many diets are set up this way, but eating healthy doesn’t mean you have to go on a restricted diet. There is so much variety among fruits, vegetables, whole grains and nuts. Try a new food like kefir or miso soup, or a new recipe from a healthy cookbook. You never know if you’ll find a new food you love.

2. Make it easier on yourself.
Take advantage of cookbooks, ready to use foods, and meal planning options that you can find online to help you to create a plan that works for you. Don’t try to figure out what to cook for dinner when you’re starving, because your body will be crying out for sugar at that time. Be proactive and have a plan, and stock your pantry and fridge with healthier options.

3. Choose just one meal.
Choosing one meal at a time to improve will help you stay focused and not feel overwhelmed. This does not mean you should eat junk or fast food the rest of the day, but focusing on one meal at a time can make the step to healthier eating a little easier. As an example, switch from cold breakfast cereals that may be high in sugars to a cooked whole grain like oatmeal, or even a yummy fruit salad for breakfast.

Taking each of these steps one at a time could really help to launch you onto a plan that will work for you. Remember it does not have to be difficult so start your plan today.

Make healthy eating simpler with the Ultimate 365 Salad Cookbook. With a different salad recipe for every day of the year, you and your family will never be bored. Just go to (Insert affiliate link here) to download instantly and start enjoying main dish, dessert, veggie, grain, bean and fruit salads now.
