Let Me Tell You About My Intern

Friday, September 21st, 2007

I wrote an article several weeks ago when I guest blogged for Angela Wills, all about how to outsource when you’re a new-ish online business owner.

You can go read that to see how to make outsourcing a bit more affordable, and I also want to expand on one of those tips. The one on child labor. :)

My 9 year old son Caleb is one of my Virtual Assistants, only his work is a little less virtual because he actually lives here in the home office. LOL! He works cheap ($6 an hour), which is quite a bit less than I pay the other VAs that I work with.

Caleb mostly works on content management for me. The first time I set him to a task, his assignment was to add articles to a site I build in XSitePro. It took him about 20 minutes to add 30 articles. Not bad! After he was done, he said: “You know Mom, I actually enjoy this.”

As he gets older I’ll have more advanced tasks for him, like keyword research and maybe some proofreading. Who knows, maybe he’ll develop a knack for graphic design or audio editing. He’s already recorded an intro for my podcast, once when I had laryngitis.

Caleb has his own little online biz that he’s growing slowly but surely. Last month I paid him his earnings (since he’s under 18 I have to manage his affiliate earnings through my accounts), and he wasn’t too impressed.

But then I reminded him that he will earn that much likely every month, and more, even if he doesn’t work at it. THAT got him interested and motivated to continue growing his blog.

Do you have a young one that you could train to help you out in your business? If you are paying your kids to help you, what do they do? Do share. :-)

File It Under "Someday"

Friday, September 21st, 2007

I’ll tell you something about me. I have Tinker blood. I have always thought that it would be fun to be homeless (yeah, I’m weird, I know). I love small spaces, and could totally live in a camper. How fun would it be to go from campground to campground enjoying the great outdoors and seeing the country?

That’s why I’ve always wanted an Airstream. This is their newest creation. Isn’t it cool?!

Everybody has to have a big dream that gets them excited. With this, a wifi connection and a truck to pull it, I could be on the road and making money while I roast marshmallows.

It’s going on my dream board. What does yours look like?

Meant to post on the 6th, but I procrastinated

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

Did you know that September 6th is Fight Procrastination Day? Yes ma’am. You see, I meant to post this on the 6th but I put it off.

Just kidding. Actually I just found out about this. But I thought it was worth talking about, and better late than never. ;)

What do you procrastinate about?

I’m not a big procrastinator in my business, but in my non-business life I find that I have too much tolerance for a lot of things, and then when they get way past the point of reasonable tolerance, I overreact. I’m trying to get a handle on that by solving problems while they’re mere “gnat bites” instead of waiting until they’re intolerable.

According to a study by the University of Calgary, more than 25% of Americans are chronic procrastinators. What is this costing us?

For starters, many things get far worse when they’re put off, and it’s a good idea to analyze that to give yourself permission to put off some things, and motivate you to do others asap. For example, dishes. If you put off doing the dishes, they’re harder to clean. If you put off vacuuming, it doesn’t really take you any longer to do the job once you do it, at least not that I’ve noticed.

What about in a business context? If you put off tweaking the design of your website or your blog template, you probably won’t suffer much in terms of income. But if you procrastinate about sending out your newsletter, it will probably cost you money!

What has helped me to overcome procrastination is two things:
1) Knowing my hourly wage
2) Outsourcing

Firstly, I sat down and figured out how many hours I work each month. I divided my monthly income by that number and got my hourly “wage”. I find it highly motivated to sit down to the computer when I KNOW that I’m going to make XX dollars in that hour! Try that and see if it doesn’t help you.

Secondly, outsourcing helps keep me on my toes for a couple of reasons. One, if I’ve paid someone to do something for me, for example add a bunch of articles to a site, then I feel motivated to make that money I’ve spent “earn” itself by getting into action doing my part, which is to edit the content to make it my own and monetize it.

Secondly, if I’m putting off starting a new project (like I’ve been guilty of here), then I hand it over to a VA to start working on. When she’s done her magic, I’m over the motivation hump and get excited about seeing the project unfold (and the income that it will bring once completed!) and get to work. It’s like looking at the blueprints of your new home. Once you see the foundation poured and the walls go up, you’re all excited.

Alice Seba recently released a free report on outsourcing that you can pick up from her blog. One of the things she talked about inside was how to outsource when you’re on a small budget. I know how to do that. I don’t have Alice’s outsourcing budget by any means, but I do outsource a good percentage of my business tasks. It takes some creativity.

So – what do you procrastinate on and what are your tips for overcoming it?

Mila’s Pep Talk

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

I really enjoyed listening to Mila Sidman’s audio pep talk and thought I would share it with you in case you haven’t heard it already.

I really admire Mila and what she has accomplished in her business and think she’s a great role model for work at home Moms. It’s obvious that her personal philosophy goes way beyond just positive thinking.

Positive thinking is a great start, but it’s like a bubble that’s easily burst. What Mila is talking about is first listening and gaining awareness into your self defeating thoughts (often referred to as “stinkin’ thinkin’) and then re-training your mind and your thoughts to go in a different direction.

This isn’t just psychobabble mumbo jumbo. It really works. Confident people act differently and attract more success. While it’s not easy to do and takes quite a lot of self discipline to change, it’s very much worth it.

Listen to Mila’s audio, and for more learning on this subject I recommend The Success Principles.

Phase One: Who Gets MommyHobby.com?

Monday, September 17th, 2007

Have you listened to WahmTalkRadio yet this morning? If you’ve read this blog much in the last few weeks or are a subscriber to my newsletter (sign up box on the right if you’re not!), you know that I’m participating in Kelly’s FlipThatWebsite project.

She has worked her magic on an old site of mine that’s been seriously neglected, and now it’s vastly improved and ready for a new owner! The site is MommyHobby.com. If you want to know all the cool stuff Kelly has done to the site to make it ready for a new Mommy, go listen to the show.

So now it’s time for me to give it away! Here’s step one:

Leave a comment below explaining why you should be the new owner of the site. As Kelly mentioned on the show, we’re looking for someone who is serious and passionate about this topic of hobbies, and not for someone who “needs” a website.

Then in one week I will invite others to vote on the contestants.

Quick! Get typing :-)

Internet Marketing Cheapskate

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

Hey, I’m all about investing in my business. I’m also all about frugality. :-)
So I love it when I can snag a good deal. Here are a couple of frugal finds that pertain to internet marketing that I thought I would share:

Kelly McCausey is holding a teleseminar that will teach more about starting your very own membership site. A membership site is my next project, and if you want to earn more residual income, get on this call. I’ll be on it with you!

DealDotCom is a new site where every day, an internet marketing product will be showcased at a discount. If I’m going to buy IM products to grow my knowledge and skills, why not get a discount? I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of deals I can snag and you can too!

A Monthly Schedule for Business – Works for me

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

Last week and then again this morning on the Moms Morning Show, I shared that I found a work schedule that was really ‘working’ for me. Kelly McCausey urged me to share it, so I am doing that now, and I hope it helps you.

One day I was brainstorming how I could be the most productive with my work time. I was sitting at Barnes and Noble with a huge notebook in front of me and had running around in my head the concept of interruptions, flow, and stuff like that. I’ve heard over and over that it takes your brain 15 minutes to recover from an interruption. Of course, I probably won’t eliminate interruptions entirely for some time while my kids are small, but one way to minimize self imposed interruptions is to focus on just one thing for an entire day.

Now, there are certain things that I do daily, regardless of my bigger picture or whatever project I have going on. I blog on this and my other blog every day, for one thing. I write a to do list in the evening for the next day. And I have some things that take place on a weekly schedule for my podcast.

I sat down and thought about all the individual things an online marketer does, and put them into 4 basic categories:

Content
Progress
Promotion
Analysis

Then I assigned one week to each major theme. So my monthly schedule looks like this:

Content, week One
Progress, week Two
Promotion, week Three
Analysis, week Four

I actually devote 8 days, not 7 to the first 3, so that the least amount of time is spent on week 4 (from 4 to 7 depending on how long the month is).

What do the 4 categories mean?

Content refers to growing my virtual real estate. So that would include:

  • Downloading my plr content from the membership sites I belong to
  • Deciding where it all should go and editing then publishing it on websites, blogs, and in autoresponders (I outsource much of this)

Progress refers to things that grow my information business like creating a new information product or special project. It also includes writing and editing reports and using those to build my mailing lists or grow my affiliate income. If I don’t have a product to work on, this is when I tweak and improve an existing site.

Promotion refers to marketing. This is the time for writing articles (I send them to a VA for distribution) and press releases (ditto). I also actively find new affiliates during this time.

And finally Analysis. This is the time for analyzing my website stats and seeing what’s working in terms of traffic generation, analyzing affiliate sales and seeing what I want to promote or drop for next month, do organizing like updating my affiliate link document (where I keep my affiliate links and log in info) and bookkeeping.

One thing I’m liking about my new system so far is that I never have to wonder what to do next. My brain is kind of at ease because I know what’s going on for that week. Even if I forget to write my to do list, I know what to tackle that day when I sit down at the computer, and I focus on that main thing for the entire week.

I hope this helps someone else, it’s working great for me!
