Helping Moms Work from Home in Atlanta

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

As I mentioned in this post about meeting online friends offline, I have begun to host seminars to teach women their options for working from home using the Internet. If you’re in the Atlanta area, you can find out about future events here.

A lot of Moms want to know how they can replace a paycheck and get to a full time income quickly. My answer to that is get into a service based business. These businesses are a great option for moms who want to be paid hourly or per project, but wants the freedom a business offers instead of working a job.

If a Mom has typing skills she can create a profitable and successful service based business as a transcriptionist. With transcription you have two options:

1. Medical Transcription
2. General Transcription

With medical transcription you’ll need an education in medical terminology and will need some type of experience in order to grow a successful business. But, general transcription requires much less.

You don’t need any specialized training, education, or experience. You simply need a desire to work, the ability to type what you hear, and a decent typing speed. Of course when you’re building a business you’ll need more than just the skills of the trade. You’ll need to know how to build, grow and market your business into the successful money maker you want.

If you want to cut your learning curve in half, I recommend buying the Transcription Starter Pack by Nell Taliercio. She has recently reduced the price from $24.95 to $17.47. I reviewed this product for Nell and it’s a tremendous value.

When you purchase the learning product you’ll receive the following:

1 hour audio that outlines how to start & grow your general transcription business
An interview with a successful general transcriber to help you learn and inspire you to action
Printable instruction eBook .
A software & hardware resource list
8 customizable website templates so you can get your business website up and running quickly
Video tutorial that walks you through setting up your website in FrontPage
A sample teleseminar, internet talk radio show and podcast for honing your skills

You can read more about general transcription and this learning product HERE.

It’s an incredible value and the perfect resource for anyone interested in creating a typing business.

Easy new way to monetize your website or blog

Monday, June 25th, 2007

I had heard a little bit about Text Link Ads before but never really did much with it until several weeks ago. I have a blog that earns very little from Adsense ads (which is pretty typical of a blog). Since it isn’t a product-focused blog, the earnings were pretty low. So I was thinking of some additional ways to monetize the thing and signed up for Text Link Ads.

Basically, Text Link Ads is like an ad sales “aggregator” of sorts. Advertisers go there to purchase text ads on high traffic sites and blogs, and webmasters looking for additional monetization for their site/blog sign up to earn money from the sale of ads.

The neat thing about TLA is that it is SO easy and hands off. All I did was install the script on my server (actually I paid Jen Houck of BlueRidgeVA to do that since I don’t even know HOW to install a script!) which took minutes, and the ads are bought, sold and added to your site/blog automatically.

Within a couple of days I got a notice that an ad had been sold and a few weeks later, Paypal payment showed up from TLA :) I really like that the ads are very, very unobtrusive. They merely link to a word or words on your html page. THAT is the ad… it’s merely a little link.

What’s not to love? That little payment was far more than I earned in one month on that blog with AdSense. And it has to be the easiest money I’ve ever earned online.

If you want to give it a spin, go here: Text Link Ads

You can set up your account so that you have to manually approve the ads before they appear if you wish. Your site also has to have certain levels of traffic and Alexa ranking, so a brand new site may not quality.

But if you have a site or blog that is established and want to add extra income passively, give Text Link Ads a try. It’s free to open a publisher account.

Why Your Brick and Mortar Needs a Website

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

Here is a question someone with a brick and mortar asked me recently, and I wanted to address it here because I think this is a common one:

Do I Need a Website for My Business and Why?
My answer was an emphatic yes, and here’s why.
Local Search

Here’s a story that illustrates that. My Mom owns a real Tea Room. I built a site for her with the business hours, contact info, events listings, menu, pictures, etc. Every time a new customer walks into her business she asks them how they heard about her. Many of them say a friend referred them, but a large number of them say: “I saw your website.”

Who would think that people would Google a tea room? But they do! When was the last time you sat down and Googled to find a local business? I did it just a few hours ago. I have NO idea where my phone book is. The dsl is always on and it’s so much easier to search online.

So if you have your own site, people can find you online. If you don’t… well… they won’t. :)

Keeping Up With Your Customers

If you have a website you can gather your clients and customers email addresses. Offer them a free article, report, a coupon code, a recipe, whatever is appropriate to your target market and ask them to sign up. Send out a newsletter every month letting them know of your newest product or service offering. Remind them to make an appointment or reorder product. Give them some informative content in the form of tips or what have you.

Not everyone will hire you or patronize your business just because they landed on your site. But they’re gone forever and won’t ever turn into a customer if they never hear of you again. A newsletter lets you keep in touch.

This leads to the third reason you should have your own site:

Extra Income Streams

Let’s say you are a financial planner. You earn money selling your financial planning services by the hour. If you had a website and sent out a newsletter, you could recommend products to your subscribers/clients that will help them with their financial concerns.

For instance, an online budgeting system or a subscription to a magazine on finances. You can use your affiliate link for this product and earn additional income. A customer who already trusts your expertise and values your opinion is likely to take your product recommendations seriously. You can write these product recommendations on your website too.

What about creating your own information product? Why not write an ebook with your best tips and offer it for sale? You could do this easily by simply asking yourself what the top questions of your clients are. Answer the questions and you’ve got a product to sell.

More Customers

What’s not to love about that? But how does a website help you get more customers? In addition to local search, your website will make it easier for the media to contact you. If a reporter is looking for a good quote from an expert, they often go online to search.

Should you hire someone else to build your website?

I actually don’t recommend this. Why? Because you give control of your marketing over to someone else. Hiring a web designer can be expensive, and the ongoing updates you’ll pay them to do will add up quick. If you build your own, you can add content quickly. Content that drives free search engine traffic, that showcases your expertise, and builds trust in you.

But what if you don’t know html?

Then use an Easy Site Builder. These are so easy to use that even the most beginning-est beginner can have an attractive, professional looking site. Easy Site Builders use templates (this one has hundreds to choose from) so all you have to do is add your content… which is much like using an email program or text editor.

Give it a test drive, it has a 10 day free trial. I’ve used this one to build several sites and I highly recommend it. It also features a built in newsletter management system and hosting in the price.

A website is more than an online business card… it’s a marketing tool that works for you 24 hours a day. :-)

Meeting Online Friends Offline

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

It’s such a thrill to meet other work at home Moms that I meet online in a real live offline environment!

A couple of months ago at the Women’s Power Summit I got to meet Lynette Chandler, a fellow Mom Masterminds member which was a real treat.

Then last week I met the phenomenal Rhea Perry, a real live guru in my book. ;) I’m still waiting for her to send me the digital pic someone took of us on her camera. LOL!

Then yesterday I met Myra Muhammad, another Mom Mastermind at a seminar I held in Atlanta. (That’s us in the picture!) Also in attendance was Velvet Haygood, who I “met” online.

Sometimes it’s a small world wide web. I went to a networking dinner once a few months ago and after introducing myself, the women sitting next to me said she was a newsletter subscriber who had been saving my emails but hadn’t read them yet. Isn’t that funny?

Who have you meet online then offline?

I really want to meet Lynn Terry, Alice Seba, Kelly McCausey, Nell Taliercio, Jen Houck, and many other Moms someday, including you if you’re reading this! What about you?

Want lots of free publicity?

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

Penny Pinching Publicity is a private monthly membership forum owned by Shannon Cherry of Be Heard Solutions. I joined as a member a little over a month ago and wanted to test it out before mentioning to you all. So far, I’m very impressed with the value Shannon provides with PPP. My membership has saved me money and time so far, both with crafting my releases and submitting them online.

Participants are taught the insider secrets of working the media by Shannon, who is an expert in Public Relations and Marketing. While I’ve been doing press releases with good effect since 2004, now I feel confident that I’ll be able to generate even more free publicity and establish a relationship with the media, both local and otherwise.

The forum provides a place to ask questions about how to pitch a story to an editor, and get feedback on your marketing efforts from Shannon and the other members… this is really valuable when writing a release. Sometimes others can point out things that aren’t obvious to us, but that can hamper our efforts.

Shannon provides hot leads that members can follow up on to try to get media coverage, a free press release each month that can be edited by members (and this is worth well more than the monthly membership fee!) , notices about changes in the media and a monthly report with tips and tricks to help small business owners get lots of free attention and publicity. She also gives members a checklist to help them submit their release.

Shannon even includes a media list with 350 publications to send your release.

I have found the membership to be extremely valuable so far, and am looking forward to continually learning how to leverage publicity for more traffic and sales. The free monthly press release alone is worth far more than $19.95. Shannon provides a lot of value for a very low price.

Many of us have used press releases to get free publicity, but we no doubt are making costly mistakes and handicapping ourselves. It’s extremely valuable to learn the ins and outs from an expert. Anyone who wants to get a lot of marketing bang for their buck should consider joining.

Lynn Terry on Content That Drives Traffic and Sales

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

Tonight was the first of the Hot Summer Seminar Series that Kelly McCausey organizes. This is a wonderfully informative audio series that I look forward to, and tonight’s seminar was no exception.

Lynn Terry has been one of my favorite bloggers and internet marketing mentors for a few years now. In fact it was her instruction that inspired me to launch my *very* first affiliate marketing site. You can read my testimonial on her site here (it’s the 4th one down).

Tonight she shared some very creative, unique ways of driving more traffic and creating sales with content… several of these I had never heard of before. She even shared two free reports with Seminar participants only. She asked us not to share these or I would mention where to get them. :)

Anyway, be sure to sign up to get the audio recordings and transcripts in order to learn from more of these awesome ladies! Here’s the lineup:

Just Add Sweat :)

Tuesday, June 5th, 2007

Because really, a little knowledge and a lot of sweat is what it takes to make money online. It’s so easy to get stuck in the minutae, and it’s easy to be an everlasting student of internet marketing and never really get going with your plan.

My friend, Nicole Dean, has just launched a fun new site with business ideas for moms, and it looks promising. She’s offering instructional ebooks to teach you how to do it, plus (and this is cool) an audio Success Story for each business idea to help you with motivation and to show you how others have had success with the idea.

In her usual goofy way (check out the pic on the home page!), she’s come up with a very interesting website name and even a mascot “Babs VonScambuster”. You’ve got to check this one out: Just Add Sweat

And, if you’re not interested in the home business ideas she offers… get on her list because they’re adding four new books and audios very soon.

The Hardest Thing For Many Wahms…

Monday, June 4th, 2007

Keeping motivated long enough to meet your goals with your business, that is :)
Today on Wahm Talk Radio, Kelly talked about a Mom who said her greatest challenge in her business was her inspired/depressed cycle of feelings. She needed consistency.

I struggle with this sometimes! When you have challenges and obstacles that inevitably arrive, how do you respond? To keep on keeping on, and think positively, is a real challenge sometimes.

I got permission to share this wonderful report on Self Improvement in Business. It discusses ways to meet your goals, how to use gratitude to change your state and attract more success, seeking out resources like mastermind groups and coaches, and other tools that can help you through the slumps and bumps in the road.

You can get it here:
