22: A Question About Mom Masterminds

Sunday, January 28th, 2007

A subscriber to my “No Fluff” newsletter asked:

“Do I have to already have a website to get started? Or does the Mom Masterminds program teach me how to set up a website?

Great question – this was my response:

Not only do you not have to have a website to join MM, but it’s fantastic if you join before you ever start your business! That way, you get off on the right track and save yourself a lot of time, energy and money. :)

There are several courses included in the MM membership that will help you set up your site for maximum results, not to mention the support you will find in the mentoring forum.

If you have questions about MomMasterminds, please ask them here. The program has been invaluable to me in my business. You can get a free trial by going HERE.

21: Keep It Simple

Thursday, January 25th, 2007

It’s so easy to get overwhelmed with your online business, isn’t it? There are so many ways to market your site and grow your business, but unfortunately, sometimes the more information we have available, the less we do.

It’s kind of like when you tell a child to clean their rooms. They take a look around, get overwhelmed, and either quit or get distracted playing. But if you give them simple instructions like: “Put your dirty clothes in the hamper and your toys in the toybox.”, they’re up and running.

I got a wonderful newsletter from Allan Gardyne of Associate Programs. Which, by the way, if you’re not on his newsletter list, I highly recommend it. It’s one of the very few that I read, word for word, every time.

He spoke of this overwhelm into inactivity phenomenon and how to overcome it:

Just do two things.

Yep, this very successful affiliate marketer, one of the most recognizable names on the Internet, said that success in affiliate marketing could be had if you did just TWO things every single day.

1) Add an article to your site
2) Get an incoming link

I couldn’t agree more with this! It really is that simple to have success online. Take out all the bells and whistles and just focus on these two things, and you’ll make money. If you want to make more money, do those things multiple times a day or pay someone else to do those things for you. But just keep it simple :)

You can read the entire article on Allan’s site HERE.

20: No one cares what you had for lunch

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

Oops. I haven’t blogged for nearly a week, but I’ve had a good excuse. My youngest got sick with Tonsillitis, and refused to breastfeed for almost a day, which gave me a wicked case of mastitis (which, if you know about such things, makes you feel like you’ve got the flu). But that’s probably more information than ever you wanted :)

Anyway, I’ll be back on the wagon now that I am over that “hit by a Mack truck” feeling. I came across a really cool book that I wanted to share. It’s all about blogging. It’s called No One Cares What You Had For Lunch – 100 Ideas For Your Blog

Neat, huh?

19: Focus, Focus, Focus

Wednesday, January 17th, 2007

2 things: First, I don’t typically put articles on my blog, but I wanted to share this one that I wrote recently about finding focus in your online business. It was originally published in the WC, which if you’re not a subscriber, you must get your free subscription now by clicking HERE.

Second, if you haven’t yet listened to the PLR audio with Kelly and Nicole of Easy PLR, DO! I listened and even got some great new ideas on how to use PLR myself, which kind of surprised me! Get it here: PLR Audio

Now for the article.

Internet Success Tip: Put Blinders On

I’ve been focusing on focus lately. You see, Kelly McCausey interviewed me as a case study of a work at home Mom who finally found some focus, with great results. Let me share the story of 3 work at home Moms. I hope their experiences will help you realize the importance of putting on blinders with your internet business.

Distracted Darla

Distracted Darla started learning about affiliate marketing. She built a small site and when it began to earn income, the wheels started turning in her head. She was doing direct sales when she started this website, but was feeling burned out. She wanted to truly be home and so decided to put her energies into affiliate marketing exclusively. Not long after, however, she heard about a new hot direct sales company with a product she loved and a great pay plan. She joined up and had great success for a few months, until the company went bust.

If Darla had put blinders on and focused on her affiliate marketing business, she would not have wasted those months. Her websites would have been much farther along than they were. She lost so much momentum as a result of allowing herself to become distracted!

Bandwagon Brenda

Being new to the business world, much less internet business, Brenda was unaware of the concept of a target market. When she built her first niche website, she went for what she thought was “hot”. She gave almost no thought to “who am I trying to sell to?”

Although her website experienced some initial success, she became bored with the website concept and had no motivation to continue. She had no idea who her target market was and therefore didn’t know what kind of content to add to the site or what to say in the newsletter (which was growing surprisingly fast!) Later on she repeated her mistake by buying up some crappy private label rights articles in a “hot” niche. That ended up being a big waste of time. Because they were outside her area of expertise, she couldn’t write any articles to help drive traffic and had to rely on search engines alone. Growing traffic to the site was a constant uphill battle every time Google did a dance.

Focused Franny

Fran stumbled around for a while on the internet and had some success, but then she joined Mom Masterminds. Her friends and mentors there kept suggesting that she choose a target market and focus on it for maximum success. She noticed that the wahms who were making the big money had a tight niche and grew their online presence by constantly building new sites and new products to offer to that same target market.

Unsure of what her strengths were, she decided to listen to what her Mastermind group was telling her. She realized that sometimes it’s difficult for you to recognize your own strengths unless they’re pointed out to you by someone else.

At first glance, it seemed that choosing her target market would limit her and would get boring after awhile. But that was not the case at all for Franny. In fact, the opposite was true. Once she chose her target market, she kept thinking of new ways to serve them, new ways to find them online, and new products to market to them. The possibilities were endless and she was excited about her business again!

Additionally, the more she served her target market, the more they began to recognize and find HER online. The more they asked her questions, which she could answer and create articles and products for them and the more her market referred her to other people. Her business kept growing, and at a much faster rate than before. When she launched a new site or product, she was able to tap into her existing subscribers, customers, traffic and affiliates to promote it. She was no longer starting from scratch each time she had a new idea.

Ladies, I have a confession to make. I know the stories of these 3 wahms so well because they are all real women. I don’t suffer from multiple personality disorder, but I have been Darla, Brenda AND Franny. My question to you is this: who do you want to be?

18: More bloggers and challenges

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

We’ve had a couple of latecomers to the challenge, they are:

Melissa of Business Mums Network
Leslie Strickland Independent Beauty Consultant

A couple of the bloggers have asked if they can invite others to join the challenge, and I say Yes! The more the merrier. Start your own challenge or do a blog Carnival, in which everyone blogs on one particular theme and links to all the other participants.

You might see a big jump in traffic to your blog. :)

17: Free PLR Training

Tuesday, January 16th, 2007

Are you unsure of how the whole PLR (Private Label Rights) thing works? Not sure why everyone is raving about PLR?

I have a neat resource to share: A free audio in which my friends Nicole and Kelly of Easy PLR share their secrets of creating great content and products with PLR.

They also have some new article packs over there so be sure to check those out too.

16: More Help for Natural Business Owners

Monday, January 15th, 2007

Speaking of which, the ecourse I just launched is here. It’s all about how natural business owners can increase their online earnings with affiliate programs.

I have two reasons for launching this.

1) I rub shoulders with a lot of “natural mommas” online and I see that so many of them are product sellers – with awesome products, no less – but they’re not taking advantage of the possibilities that exist with affiliate marketing. They could market complementary products to their visitors and newsletter subscribers and easily increase their profits.

2) I need more great products to market on my own network of sites. So I would love for more of these Moms to launch affiliate programs of their own!

The ecourse features an interview with Kelly McCausey, who earns a substantial portion of her full time online income passively with affiliate programs. I hope it helps you :)

15: Talk about Success Pressure!

Monday, January 15th, 2007

Have you ever heard the term Success Pressure? I take it to mean steps that you take to almost force yourself to succeed.

For instance, some people view making some purchase in their business (whether it be buying an information product to increase their knowledge, or paying a VA, or buying PLR content) as a powerful impetus to move forward. If you have invested money, you’re motivated to DO something with the information so that you can recoup your investment… and then some.

Well today, Kelly McCausey sent an email out to her list mentioning a free ecourse I was launching. It offered a free audio in which I interviewed her about her success with affiliate marketing. Only, it wasn’t quite ready yet! I started getting opt ins regardless. ;)

So I had to scramble to get some content loaded into the autoresponder. You know what I’ve learned when things like this happen?

  • It takes me far less time than I imagine to finish something up when I HAVE TO do it.
  • It doesn’t have to be perfect to be good
  • Sometimes, a deadline is a good thing

So have you been putting off finishing off something because you had to get one last bit of feedback from your mastermind group, or because there was one tiny bit of copy to write, or some other excuse you’re making instead of hitting that Publish button?

Git ‘er dun.

Then go back and make it better. :)

14: Google Alerts – How to use them

Monday, January 15th, 2007

Coincidentally as I was going to sit down yesterday to write a post on this very topic, Kristie T beat me to the punch!

Well it’s worth repeating. Google Alerts can be a neat way to save a little time in your business. Kristie asked her blog readers if any of them used Google Alerts and if so, how. She mentioned that she likes to know if anyone is talking about her and her business.

I use Google Alerts for a couple of things. One, similar to Kristie, I have Google let me know when my name pops up in searches online. It feels good to see my articles published. Once, a webmaster forgot to link to my site in my author bio. The link was there but it wasn’t “clickable”. I sent the site owner a quick friendly email letting them know, and they promptly apologized and fixed the problem.

Also, I like to get the alerts so that I will always have lots of blog fodder. Let’s say your main market is tennis players. Set up an alert and let Google email you every day or week with tons of links to news, blogs and the like around tennis.

You would never run out of newsy stuff to discuss, and it would also likely spark article ideas. You could find new affiliate products to promote and new website owners (that could be construed as competition) to befriend and possibly venture with.

You can sign up for Google Alerts for free. Get creative with it and see how it could benefit you.

13: Get lucky with press releases

Friday, January 12th, 2007

The other week at Mom Masterminds I posted about a press release that I wrote for my Mom. It was announcing an event she was hosting for breast cancer awareness at her Tea Room in Fairburn, GA.

Since then, she has gotten several phone calls from reporters. One of whom was from the Atlanta Journal Constitution, who wrote an article that appeared on the first page of the food section. Another was a local county newspaper that put her picture and a write up on the front page. And she says her phone is ringing off the hook with reservations. :)

Are you doing press releases to get free publicity? If not, why not? Because you aren’t sure if anyone is interested in your online business? Think again. They just might be. The key is finding something newsworthy that benefits the reporter’s customer – the readers of the newspaper.

Here is where I learned about writing effective press releases.
