If you’ve been online at all this week surely you’ve been hearing about this Death of Adsense report. I’m not a big one for scare tactics and shock value, but I went in with an open mind.
If you want to read the report, you can download it at www.thedeathofadsense.com .
Even though I don’t agree with much of what the author says about AdSense, I DO think there are some very valuable lessons to be learned from the ebook, namely:
Don’t put all your marketing eggs into one basket
Nice guys and girls do better for the long haul
How to build a nice fat marketing list.
If you read the report and get these lessons then it’s well worth your time in my opinion. Scott Boulch did a great job creating a buzz with this free report and now he likely has tens of thousands of subscribers. Pretty smart fella.
I don’t believe that Scott is out to deceive with his message. He has found a business model that works for him, and works well. My friend Alice Seba has written a very intelligent description of his business model on her blog here.
Scott’s report makes clear that relying on “black hat” or unethical tactics to trick the search engines is not a viable method of building a long term business. Most of you as work at home Moms have never used any of these tactics, but the point remains that if you are honest in business, it comes back to you. Spending money on software that promises “instant” anything is a waste of money in my opinion and reflects a greedy mindset. That kind of thing tends to backfire.
Scott’s ebook also shows that relying on one source of income for your online business is a bad idea. If you’re building sites with great content and monetizing them with Adsense, that’s great. But it’s even better if you’re also collecting email addresses so you have people you can market to over and over again, people who trust you and like you. It’s also better if you’re monetizing your site in other ways, for instance with pay per lead or pay per sale affiliate programs. And getting into selling your own digital product is a great goal too.
In addition to that, I’ll add that relying on one source of traffic is a bad idea. I made this mistake and watched my income and AdSense earnings tank when Google decided she no longer liked my biggest site. I’ve since become a lot smarter. Chalk that up to a lesson learned.
In response, Joel Comm has put together a cute little report that tells the truth about AdSense:
That it can be a great way to earn more money from your site when done right. Joel’s report is straightforward and doesn’t scream “scare tactic”!
